The Kodak Ektra, produced from 1941 to 1948, represented Kodak's ambitious attempt to compete with German precision cameras like Leica and Contax. This 35mm rangefinder featured an exceptionally robust all-metal construction with a focal plane shutter offering speeds from 1 second to 1/1000 second. The Ektra accepted a comprehensive system of interchangeable Ektar lenses, from 35mm wide-angle to 135mm telephoto, all renowned for their optical excellence. Despite its superb build quality and advanced features including a film advance lever and rapid loading system, the Ektra's high price and complex operation limited its commercial success. Today, it's highly prized by collectors as one of the finest American-made cameras ever produced.
